I was inspired to depict Coral reefs in my enamel jewellery following a visit to London Zoo where they have a truly spectacular display. I also visited the London Aquarium to study the corals in their display in order to better understand how they all grow together. I have long been interested in conservation issues and if felt fitting to choose to depict these beautiful, vibrantly colourful images in cloisonné enamel.
They comprise fine silver cloisonné and basse-taille enamel on silver, set in a bezel. Many show a coral reef which is darkening and fading at the edges signifying where they are dying. The centres are vibrantly coloured symbolising hope if we take action to support them. The sea covers 70% of the earth and is undeniably vital to our existence. Although Coral reefs occupy less than 1% they support nearly a 1/4 of all marine species and a billion people living in coastal communities depend on them for their livelihoods. Additionally they play a vital role in helping reduce storm surge, flood risk and erosion. They are under threat from pollution, climate change and overfishing. Jewellery has been used throughout history to convey messages and this piece follows this tradition and aims to raise awareness of the issues and solutions.
