This is part of a small series of pieces I made for an exhibition with a theme of Undiscovered. I thought of kingdoms under the sea that we are yet to find and I was reminded of a colour pencil drawing by JR Tolkien which is entitled ‘The Merking’s Palace Garden’. The inspiration for the piece comes from the title although the finished piece is very different. The enamel pendant features gold cloisonné fish swimming with vibrantly coloured seaweeds and an Eastern style palace which is very much inspired by my love of stones from 1001 Nights. On the top are waves breaking and the whole piece is hand engraved which gives a beautiful and delicate vibrancy to the design. 

The pendant measures approximately 58mm x 46mm and with the beads measures 46cm. This can be varied if required. The necklace was made as a developmental piece for the necklace that won a silver award at the 2021 Goldsmiths’ Craftsmanship and Design Awards. The necklace is silver and gold cloisonné enamel on hand engraved silver. It is hallmarked by the London Assay Office.
